Where to find your Mac fonts

(For more general information about fonts, please see this page.)

Fonts will usually be found in the [startup volume]:System Folder:Fonts:folder, unless a program like ATM Deluxe or Suitcase loads them from another location. If you're using ATM Deluxe, you can command-click on the font name and it will show you a popup path to the font. With Suitcase 8, you can click open the triangle next to "info" in the bottom left side of the screen; the location is listed after the word 'Where'.

TrueType

Mac TrueType font sampleA TrueType font usually has all styles contained inside a single font suitcase.

This shows the opened suitcase. The multiple "A"s on the icon indicate that the font is scalable (TrueType rather than bitmap). Just send us the suitcase; don't open it or separate its files. Note that there are no true italic versions of this font.

Type 1 (PostScript)

Mac font suitcase sampleMac Type 1 font sampleA font suitcase containing at least one bitmap for each style in the font; one outline file for each style in the family.

The icon used for PostScript font outline files can vary; this red "A" is common for Adobe fonts.

Inside the suitcase, each bitmap icon shows a single "A" and the filename includes the size in points. Only one size is required per style, but several are typically provided.

Multiple Master

Mac Multiple Master font sampleMultiple Master fonts are a kind of PostScript font.

A Multiple Master font requires a font suitcase containing at least one bitmap for each master instance of the font and one Outline file for each master (variations along available axes share the same outline).

There are a few other files in this folder: a set of AFM (Adobe Font Metric) files and a ReadMe. These three are what's needed.
